The General Radio 1656 Impedance Bridge was introduced in 1970 Catalog U and remained available through Catalog 1978.

The Type 1656 Impedance Bridge is last in a long line of manual impedance bridges starting with 650-A in 1933. It features a built in generator and detector with side panel connections for external ones. The new CRL device that displays results in a digital format was a collaboration between Oak Manufacturing and General Radio. The DQ dial is of the conventional design. Power is by five D-Cells four for the generator/ac detector and one for the dc detector. Both batteries can be checked by the front panel function switch.
