The '''General Radio 1656 Impedance Bridge''' was introduced in 1970 Catalog U and remained available through Catalog 1978. 

It is last in a long line of manual impedance bridges starting with [[650-A]] in 1933.  

The 1656 features a built-in generator and detector, with side-panel connections for external ones.  
The new CRL device that displays results in a digital format was a collaboration between Oak Manufacturing and General Radio. 
The DQ dial is of the conventional design.  

The 1656 is powered by five D-cells – four for the generator/AC detector, and one for the DC detector.  Both batteries can be checked by the front panel function switch.
